Claims Editor

Patent claims define the legal scope of your invention. PatentPublish provides specialized tools for writing effective claims.

Understanding Claims

Independent Claims

Stand-alone claims that define the invention:

1. A system comprising:
a processor configured to receive input data;
a memory storing instructions; and
a display for presenting results.

Dependent Claims

Build on independent claims to add specificity:

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor comprises a neural network.
3. The system of claim 2, wherein the neural network is a transformer model.

Claim Formatting

PatentPublish automatically formats claims:

  • Claim Numbers: Bold, properly numbered
  • Indentation: Nested elements indented
  • Punctuation: Semicolons between elements, period at end
  • Antecedent Basis: "a" for first mention, "the" for subsequent

Writing Claims with AI

  • Specify the number of claims desired
  • Improve Existing Claims

  • Select the Claims section
  • Use AI mode "Improve Section"

    - "Broaden claim 1 to cover alternative implementations"

    - "Add a method claim"

    Claim Types

    Apparatus Claims

    Claim a system or device:

    A device comprising: [elements]...

    Method Claims

    Claim a process:

    A method comprising: [steps]...

    Computer-Readable Medium Claims

    Claim software:

A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed, cause a processor to: [operations]...

    Best Practices

  • Start Broad: First claim should be the broadest
  • Add Fallbacks: Dependent claims provide fallback positions
  • Multiple Categories: Include apparatus AND method claims
  • Reference Numbers: Use parenthetical references: "processor (102)"
  • Avoid Means-Plus-Function: Unless necessary for clarity
